Costa Rica: Pura Vida, chasing waterfalls and back yard Sloth visits.

Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or just someone looking to relax and unwind, Costa Rica has something special to offer. Here’s a glimpse of what we experienced, from sloths in our backyard to the magic of La Fortuna and beyond.

A Wild Welcome: Sloths in the Backyard

One of the most magical experiences of our trip to Costa Rica was the unexpected sight of a sloth hanging out right in our backyard. These slow-moving, gentle creatures are native to the region and are often spotted hanging out in the canopy. It’s moments like these that make Costa Rica’s wildlife so special — it’s not just about seeing the animals, but experiencing them in their natural habitat. My favourite part about the sloth was his little “centre part” and perma smile.

Costa Rica is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a vast array of species, including exotic birds, monkeys, frogs, and of course, sloths.

Dominical: A Coastal Paradise

One of my favourite spots was for sure Dominical, a laid-back beach town along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Dominical is famous for its incredible surf breaks, but even if you’re not a surfer, there’s plenty to enjoy. The town has a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with friendly locals, boutique shops, and great places to grab a bite.

The beach is beautiful, with long stretches of golden sand framed by dramatic cliffs and lush jungles. It’s the perfect spot to catch a sunset or take a swim in the warm, inviting waters. Dominical is also surrounded by lush rainforests, which provide the perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures, from hiking to wildlife watching.

La Fortuna: Waterfalls and Volcanoes

The highlight of this area is undoubtedly the Arenal Volcano, which towers over the landscape and offers stunning views. You can take a hike through the rainforest, exploring trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints. But perhaps the most awe-inspiring part of La Fortuna is its waterfalls.

The La Fortuna Waterfall is a must-see. This magnificent waterfall plunges 70 meters into a crystal-clear pool surrounded by lush greenery. The hike down to the waterfall is a bit steep, but the reward is well worth it. Depending on the weather, you can swim in the cool waters at the base or simply marvel at the beauty of the falls as they crash into the river below.

Pure Vida: The Spirit of Costa Rica

“Pura Vida” is more than just a saying in Costa Rica — it’s a way of life. It translates to “pure life,” but its meaning goes far beyond that. It represents the laid-back, joyful, and positive attitude that Costa Ricans (or Ticos, as they call themselves) embrace every day. It’s a reminder to slow down, appreciate life, and enjoy the beauty of nature around you.

The people of Costa Rica are some of the warmest and most welcoming I’ve met during my travels. Whether you’re visiting a local café or hiking through the jungle, the Ticos will greet you with a smile and a friendly “Pura Vida!” They take pride in their country’s beauty and are happy to share it with visitors from all over the world. The kindness of the people makes the experience even more memorable, and it’s clear that Costa Rica’s peaceful vibe starts with its people.

Prices: A Luxury Destination

Now, let’s talk about the cost of this paradise. Costa Rica, while absolutely beautiful, is not a budget destination. Prices can be relatively high compared to other Central American countries. Accommodation, food, and activities are priced similarly to what you might expect in more developed destinations. Expect to pay between $50 to $200 USD per night for decent accommodations, depending on the level of comfort and location. Meals can cost anywhere from $10 to $30 USD, especially if you dine in popular tourist spots.

Tours and activities, such as visiting the Arenal Volcano, going on guided hikes, or exploring the waterfalls, can also add up. For example, a day tour to a wildlife sanctuary or a trip to a waterfall can cost anywhere from $50 to $100 USD per person. If you’re looking to stay in luxurious resorts or enjoy guided excursions, you can expect to spend even more.

That being said, the value you get for your money is undeniable. The unique experiences in Costa Rica — the pristine nature, the diverse wildlife, and the stunning landscapes — make the prices worth it. Plus, the ability to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy a peaceful escape from the fast-paced world is priceless.

Costa Rica truly lives up to its reputation as one of the world’s top eco-tourism destinations, and once you experience it, you’ll understand why “Pura Vida” is more than just a saying — it’s a way of life.

With love,
Eden Fraietta
